The Modern Women print, created for an exhibition at GL Strand in central Copenhagen, is based on a painting by the Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) The soft pastels, muted details, and confident gaze of the subject combine to create a stunning print that will fit in perfectly within a gallery wall but will also stand out beautifully on its own. The original painting, Circus Girl, (1916) is found at the Finnish National Gallery.

Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is not well known outside of Finland by she is one of the country's most loved painters. Very progressive for her time, she is renowned for her many portraits including many of herself. Her work is very personal and infused with melancholic undertones. Her models were people she knew. Her style changed over her long career as a painter. Starting out with realism she evolved to expressionism and the older she became the more she valued simplicity. She continued to paint actively into her old age even while in a nursing home.
