The print L'infermière is based on a painting, Nurse I, from Helene Schjerfbeck's extensive collection of portraits. Saturated with emotion and grace, the brushstrokes, muted tones, and the nurse's soft expression contribute to a stunning print that would fit in perfectly with any gallery wall but also stands out beautifully on its own. The original painting is in The Finnish National Gallery.

Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) is not well known outside of Finland by she is one of the country's most loved painters. Very progressive for her time, she is renowned for her many portraits including many of herself. Her work is very personal and infused with melancholic undertones. Her models were people she knew. Her style changed over her long career as a painter. Starting out with realism she evolved to expressionism and the older she became the more she valued simplicity. She continued to paint actively into her old age even while in a nursing home.
